Personal leadership requires transparency.

  1. Dear Bill, Thank you for sharing and quoting all scholars and leaders of different time. I promise you that I will try to Google their names though it may not be easy to know all of them. What I just remember from Bonaparte, he was a great figure in western history particularily in FRANCE Revolution.
I mostly love this quote: “Leadership is an opportunity to serve. It is not a trumpet call to self-importance.” J. Donald Walters
Happy New year and God bless you in 2014 and beyond.
I will re read the post. It seems important for me especially in 2014.
    Love and prayers,

    • Greetings Charmant!
Happy New Year! You’re very welcome. I wanted the list to be a fair representation.
Indeed, true leadership is service, and that from the heart, as I have written about love-based leadership before.

Thank you so much for the love and prayers. Always appreciated, and likewise for you.
May God bless you with every good thing in 2014!

  2. Hi Bill – Personal leadership is leading your life in the direction that is authentic and can be seen by all. Nothing to hide! I love #104 – too many people change only when they HAVE to instead of changing prior to on their own time. Love that one Bill! Really qreat quotes here. Added to Listly!

    • Hi Lisa,
Yes, with nothing to hide, there is no fear of exposure. Aside from that, true leaders do not operate from fear.
I appreciate you sharing this on Listly. Thank you very much.

      Kind Regards,

  3. Hello Bill!

Hope you had a wonderful holiday? I missed your posts and was patiently waiting for this day – thanks for keeping to your word.

Sure, I’ve bookmarked this entry and will be going through it from time to time. I am pretty sure it would prove to be a great, intelligent and very motivating source!

However, I must not fail to mention my favourite: “No man ever became great or good except through many and great mistakes.” ~ William Gladstone

I have not yet found anything more true as relates to success and personal development than that!

Have a truly fulfilled New Year!

    • Hello Terungwa,
Yes, we enjoyed a meaningful time with family and friends, and having set aside that time did not publish last Thursday,
Thank you for your patience. I know that you are well along your path in personal leadership, and now you have an extra
      resource to refer to. 🙂

I agree with you. Everyone who has ever been successful has made plenty of mistakes. They are not things to be avoided.
They are teachers on the path that serve as guideposts.

Thank you very much Terungwa. May this year be your year of manifold blessings!

  4. OK, let’s try again… My comment didn’t go through I guess.

That’s a wonderful way to start the new year, Bill. What wonderful list of quotes.

I think my favorite one and the one I can certainly relate to is the one by Marcus Aurelius which says that the quality of our life depends on the quality of our thoughts. There is no doubt about that.

Thank you for this list that we can go back and refer to all year long.

    Have a wonderful week!

    • Greetings Sylviane,
You’re very welcome. Thank you for your comments. Always appreciated! 🙂
Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is one of my favorite books. It’s very true… if you wish to have a quality life
filled with quality memories, then think quality thoughts.

Have an enjoyable week as well.

  5. Thank you Bill for inspiration for days to come. These quotes are what I need to begin the new year as I am learning to “Follow the Leader” in me right now. Yes I am moving for a new improved leadership design for my life that I can appreciate for myself. As a leader, how can others follow the light that I have if I can’t recognize it within me? I have tried to find others to follow and for some reason I always end up looking back within myself. What does that mean? Good or bad? I have only read a few of the quotes today, but I do plan to use them very much in the near future. One that stuck with me today is this…… It takes a couple of years just to get the background and knowledge that you need before you can go into detailed training for your mission.” ~ Sally Ride. To me this highlighted that Personal leadership is not an overnight success…but many little stories of attempts and failures, achievements mixed with mistakes…but the idea of working at accomplishing something important to me amidst all the value-added happenings of life is very key to it all. Happy New Year blessings and love to you! Appreciate the special things you do…keep up the great work that you are doing! 🙂

    • Hello Marian,
You’re quite welcome! I’m glad that these quotes will serve the purpose of helping you as you journey forward.
I think Sally Ride’s comment is important in context with the fact that she became the first American woman in
space. She persisted until she achieved her dream. What are often termed “an overnight success” took years of
preparation, such as was required of Sally.

Accomplishments usually follow hard work, so know that you will be rewarded for your efforts.
My love and appreciation to you for your kind encouragement.

  6. Happy new year Bill! These Leadership quotes are profoundly selected to convey diverse perspectives for personal leadership developments initiatives. This one here is very striking and endearing to my heart and I’ve already posted it to my Facebook page for my friends to share:
“You only have control over three things in your life — the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take (your behavior). How you use these three things determines everything you experience. If you don’t like what you are producing and experiencing, you have to change your responses.” ~ Jack Canfield

Besides, I’ve likewise forwarded this blog post to circles of my relationships and mentees for their perusal in this new year! God bless and reward your consistent diligence and perseverance in all things in 2014!

    • Happy New Year Ime!
Indeed, a broad spectrum of leadership styles and experiences from many wise people are always healthy assets to one’s
personal leadership. Yes, we are responsible for what we put into our minds, which, of course, determines our actions.

Thank you very much for helping to expand my reach. Thank you also for those words of blessing. I receive them!
God bless you in every endeavor, especially those leading to 2015.

  7. Mary Stephenson says:

    Hi Bill

So many great quotes. A lot of “so called” leaders should take a good read on your list.

I especially liked #16 and #107. If we would remember to pull them up in our minds when things seem stacked against us we would find life much easier.

2013 was better than 2012, so here is hoping that 2014 will be a great year beyond what we believe possible.

    • Hi Mary,
I agree with you. Some people are put into a position of leadership, but do not have the leadership skills required.
Some think that as long as they’re popular, they will get others to do whatever they want.
Leadership begins with serving others, not with what can be taken from them.

Yes, it’s always “in the moment” that we need to being forth those things we have learned to serve us to remember
how to handle our challenges effectively.

May you accomplish all that you desire this year!

      Kind Regards,

  8. Awesome post, William 🙂

I’ve never spent much time with personal leadership (personal development if more of my area…perhaps personal leadership is included in personal development?).

To me, personal development is all about improving my life (through which I can improve and help others and their lives).

2013 was a big year of me, in terms of personal development. I learned a lot, formed a lot of habits and improved myself for the better (I am continuing it throughout this year :D).

Anyways, thank you for sharing this post, William (Especially, appreciate the compilation of quotes). I can choose a single one, but I especially liked #3, #32 and #101.

    • Greetings Jeevan!
Happy New Year, my friend. Personal leadership is the internal initiative to take full responsibility for your life.
It progressively comes along with personal development, such as the improvements of which you speak. I’m glad you have dedicated yourself
to learning more and reinforcing those new habits. I’m cheering you on!

You’re very welcome. I’m glad to contribute.

      All the best!

  9. Hi Bill,

Happy New Year! What a great first post of the year you have written. I like quotes because I sometimes use them for affirmations. My favorite one here is number 7 “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”

We can have a clear vision, and as long as we act upon it, we can make it a reality.

    Thanks again!

    • Hi Donna,
Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, and every success with your new project! You are so welcome 🙂 Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
You’ve hit upon the key there… as long as we take action. John O’Donohue once said, “It’s the unseen life that dreams us.”
We can each only be responsible for shaping and then awakening our dreams.

May the close of this year prove all your dreams true.

  10. Hi Bill,

Wow, you’ve got some gems in there.

I particularly like the one, “Popularity is not leadership.” Many people today believe that having a lot of followers establishes them as a niche leader. I believe it’s the amount of influence in the direction of positive change that establishes someone as a thought leader online, and influence is the result of connection, not Twitter followers.

Wishing you a very prosperous and memorable 2014,

    • Hi Cole,
Thank you kindly. I’m glad you found something meaningful to you. I like that quote as well, and I agree with you about connection with
your audience as distinguished from followers. Contrary to Twitter’s policies, many people purchase fake followers to “appear” popular.
I think character is far more important than reputation.

Thank you for your kind regards, and for stopping by to comment. I wish you the very same.
Perhaps we’ll even get a chance later in the year to go fishing together. 🙂

May your burdens be light and your blessings heavy!

    Hey Bill,

I have been wanting to grow in personal leadership for years. I am very glad that you posted this for us for our benefit and not your enrichment! You not only provided a buffet of wisdom found in the quotes, but also the inspiration to live out the precious jewels found in the quotes. I am going to have a lot of difficulty finding which people to R.S.V.P. on, and what makes them successful.

    I appreciate you Bill always!

    Thanks again,

    • Hi Sean,
I appreciate you too, my friend, and I wish you every success. Reflect on the personal leadership quotes throughout the year and use them as guideposts.
About the RSVP… biographies are a great resource to obtain background information on people. You may be able to reach out to people on Twitter and ask people questions that will provide you answers.

I know this: If you persist in doing the very best you are able, according to your God-given gifts, you will meet with great success.

      All the best!

  12. All quotes are amazing and ones that everyone should follow and listen to.

The quote that Calvin Coolidge said is one of my favorites.

Persistence and determination are both kings!

I am glad that you resonate with that quote. When we think about our lives, and the journey that we are all on, we call upon persistence and determination many times to see us through. Charles F. Kettering observed, “Failure is the path of least persistence.” Unfortunately, many people go this route.

I appreciate you visiting and look forward to your next visit. I will likewise visit your website.

May all that you aspire to and hope for come to pass in 2014!

  13. Hey Bill,

Where can I begin? Well first of all, Happy New Years to you! Great to see you in 2014. Second, these are all fabulous quotes. I’ve heard of maybe 30% of them. I’m going to keep this comment short and let you know I’m going to do as i was told and use this as a reference. But I can tell you this, starting the year with great quotes like this will definitely get you on a great start! Thanks for sharing!

    • Hello Sherman!
Happy New Year to you also! I wish you health, happiness and prosperity!
I am glad to contribute this resource which you can refer to throughout the year. Have fun as you learn about the other 70% 🙂

You’re very welcome! May you be continually inspired!

  14. Hi Bill,

First off, I appreciate you stopping by my site. It’s always nice to connect with like-minded individuals like yourself. 🙂

Just like Sherman, I’ve heard about 30-35% of the ones you listed.

The one that stuck out the most was that you quoted, “A day well spent is one in which you have invested in others by giving of yourself. Be love to others”.

Love that! It’s all about the people you serve and the value that you give. Great site, as this is my first time here, and I’ll be back soon.

    Thanks Bill!

    • Welcome Nate,
You’re very welcome. I appreciate you. I’m grateful for the connection also.

It’s nice to know that one of my thoughts on personal leadership is meaningful to you.
I believe that true leadership is heart-based and seeks first to add value to others.
Thank you for the feedback. Much appreciated. 🙂

      Yours in Success,
