Vitality is also an ability.

Vitality is also an ability.

When I hear the word vitality, I think of the Latin phrase, “Vita Brevis.” Translated, it means “Life is brief.”

Many people wonder their whole lives… “What is the meaning of life?

Some say the meaning of life is to have a life of meaning.

The wisest thing I’ve ever heard about the power of your purpose, was stated by Joseph Campbell,

LIFE has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when YOU ARE the answer.

WHAT exactly is VITALITY?

Quite often people think of vitality as mental vigor or as the capacity to survive.

These are certainly important aspects. But I would like to approach this topic from another angle.

I think that VITALITY is what it takes to win in life. Without the power to live, grow and thrive, one is dull, drab and dreary.

VITALITY is your ambition to achieve… the drive in your determination… your inner initiative.

It is the bounce in your buoyancy… the energy you put into your efforts… your get up and go!

VITALITY is the … the impetus to improve… the momentum of your motivation… the pep in your pizzazz.

VITALITY is what I call your “INNER WINNER.” Finnish poet Edith Södergran said,

The inner fire is the most important thing mankind possesses.”

Here are some questions designed to STRENGTHEN your inner winner…
to help you find the power of your purpose. Ask yourself:

  • WHAT is it your heart really resonates with?
  • What is it that really gives you the motivation to get moving every morning?
  • What are your core values… your basic beliefs… your highest ideals?
  • How committed are you to bring out the best in yourself? Is there ever a good reason to hide this?
  • What actionable steps are you taking to accomplish your goals and objectives? As I’ve said before, “The staircase to SUCCESS is built entirely of ACTIONABLE STEPS.
  • How daring are you? What risks are you willing you take to succeed?
  • How willing are you to be fully alive? … to make the most of your life?
  • What are your TOP THREE priorities for this week?
  • How do you plan to add value to others? Make a list of all the ways.

You may find it helpful to allow yourself the time to really reflect on these questions.
These are very personal questions. HOW you answer them defines who you become.

9 Ways to Supercharge Your Vitality

  1. CHEERFUL COUNTENANCE. A cheerful countenance beats a dour disposition any day. “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands!” You likely remember that lyrical line. Sometimes though, it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and lose our sense of ha-ha. Remind your face how happy you are. Remember to laugh. Smile brightly. 🙂 Lighten up and live!
  2. EAGER EXPECTATION. When you place EAGER in front of EXPECT, you have a potent combination for success. What goals do you eagerly expect to achieve in the next month? What degree of DRIVING DETERMINATION will see that you accomplish all that you desire this year? Always having something to look forward to boosts your vitality.
  3. ENERGETIC ENGAGEMENT. Notwithstanding that we all need a balance between activity and rest, it is important to remain engaged in life. Lax and lethargic won’t help you. Do you remember Newton’s First Law of Motion? It states, “A body at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts on it, and a body in motion at a constant velocity will remain in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force.GET GOING! Don’t be busy for the sake of being busy. Make it meaningful by being energetically engaged. This way opportunity will meet success.
  4. ENOUGH EXERCISE. Getting enough exercise is great for stamina strengthening. The proper levels of regular exercise maintain your vital organs, keep your skin radiant, and your countenance cheerful. 🙂 You also have more energy and feel more alive after exercising.
  5. INCREASE INTERESTS. The more you increase interests in life, in learning and growing, the more your supercharge your vitality. Life begets life. Keep it interesting. Learn as much as possible every day.
  6. LIMITLESS LOVE. Love like there is no tomorrow. As far as possible, love everyone you meet by accepting them as they are, and showing them respect. Focus on making a real difference. BE LOVE TO OTHERS. Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset said, “Love is that splendid triggering of human vitality the supreme activity which nature affords anyone for going out of himself toward someone else.
  7. NECESSARY NUTRITION. When you see the word nutrition, think of the word nurture. Having a healthy, balanced diet includes getting the necessary nutrition. This ensures that you keep your immune system strong
  8. POSITIVE PEOPLE. In his book “Travels with Charley: In Search of America,” John Steinbeck makes a curious comment. “Strange how one person can saturate a room with vitality, with excitement. Then there are others, and this dame was one of them, who can drain off energy and joy, can suck pleasure dry and get no sustenance from it. Such people spread a grayness in the air about them.” Surround yourself with enthusiastic energizers — those who bolster, edify and encourage you.
  9. SUFFICIENT SLEEP. Getting regular rest is especially important to your overall health and well-being. Even though people know this, they don’t get a sound sleep that is instrumental in restoring their body. Rather than burning the candle at both ends, listen to your body and get your required rest.

For the acronym buffs, VITALITY is…

Vigorous Intensity Transforms Ambitious Living Into Today’s You

Over To You…

Are there other things you would add to this list? I’d like to know.
Please add value by contributing your thoughts here. Thank you so much.

Remember: You’ve got what it takes to BE SUCCESSFUL!
Have a SPLENDID day, friends!

  1. Without vitality, no power of mentality can deliver any quality. Vitality is a must, in any walk of life,. for creating a sense of urgency and finishing well.

    • Hi Bidur,

      Thank you for commenting.

You are absolutely right Bidur. We are created for GREATNESS and are meant to finish well.
Without a sense of urgency, other things crop into one’s life as well, such as apathy, complacency and laziness.

      Kind Regards,

  2. Thank you Bill, for expressing ideas in acronymic forms; memorable they are.

    • You’re very welcome Bidur.

I love the creative challenge to make the letters of the acronym match the meaning of the word.

      Take Care,

      • Welcome come, Bill. I love the way you so concisely and accurately express ideas in a nutshell. In fact, whenever I can manage, I copy your acronyms, so that I later may revisit them, for refreshing my mind.
May the Lord who has risen bless all your endeavors!

  3. I love this Bill, Vitality.
When I read your interpretation concerning Love. I was amazed on how you said that we should love like there is no tomorrow. You are totally right. Jesus reminded his disciples and the crowd that they Must Love. Allow me to link this point with waht he mentioned in Matthew 25:35 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in” Again, Thanks a lot.
Love like there is no tomorrow. As far as possible, love everyone you meet by accepting them as they are, and showing them respect. Focus on making a real difference.Bill

    • Hello Sengabira,

Glad you like it, my friend. Yes, Jesus taught many great examples of being love to others.
As you shared on Facebook, I encourage you t get enough exercise. You can do it!
Thank you for commenting and social sharing. Much appreciated. 🙂

      May God bless you richly.

  4. “VITALITY is what it takes to win in life.” Absolutely amazing words!

And you are right. Many many people spend entire life wondering from this to that in search of “meaning” when they don’t take time to look within.

  5. Thanks Bill for awesome word “Vitality” for the day.

  6. I think I need, especially extra sleep and the spices from other components to boost my vitality for greater performance and fulfillment!

  7. Hey Bill,

I just love this list! What resonates with me the most is #8. “Travels with Charley: In Search of America,” by John Steinbeck. We can feel that energy of vitality and excitement when someone comes into a room that is positive. But on the other hand, there are the “Barnacle People” who can suck your energy dry just by walking in the room. Yes, they do spread that “grayness” that he says in the quote. We must surround ourselves with positive people to re-vitalize ourselves and keep our vitality going.

Also “Interests” – when I meet people that have no interests I’m so out of there! It bores me to tears and I cannot understand it. Maybe it is because I have so many interests and like to be around like minded people.

This is a great post and I just love your format.

    • Hi Donna!

Thank you so much for those kind words of encouragement, which bring me vitality. “) I agree with you.
Being around positive people is very important, since there are no shortage of thoughtless people
whose only consideration is to put people down and discourage them.

I, too, love being with like-minded people. I really resonate with compassionate, understanding and wise people.

Have a fantastic weekend! I look forward to your next post.

  8. Hi Bill,

It’s essential to keep our vitality up, I think that vitality is a frame of mind too. Some people are always up-beat no matter what and some are always down no matter what as well.

I so agree with that quote, life has no meaning but the one we give it. So true. Much deeper thought than one might think. Just think about it for a minute. A tree is alive too, right? Yet, does its life have the same meaning as yours or mine?

A lot of people are down more often than they are up, but it’s essential that we burst with vitality as life is brief, indeed!

    • Hi Sylviane,

Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate the points you are making here.
Yes indeed. I often say, “Life is too short to live in a hurry… Life is too long for heartache and worry.”
Considering the Latin phrase “Vita Brevis” meaning “Life is brief,” I think we are all better off trading our
time for those things that give us vitality. I, for one, do not waste time on pity parties.
True living is a celebration of every moment.

      Have a joyful weekend!

  9. Hi Bill,

I really had to smile when I read “VITALITY is the pep in your pizzazz.” I just love that.

I think it’s a frame of mind as well. 99.9% of the time I’m very upbeat and positive. Even when there are some dreary things happening around me I thank God that all is well with me. It’s the way I continue to look at life and just that way of thinking helps keep me up.

I also love the examples you gave because staying healthy, getting plenty of sleep, hanging around positive people, etc. is a big part of it. I’ve had friends in my life that all they ever did was complain so no wonder they were miserable.

As you so eloquently put it, “vitality It is the bounce in your buoyancy… the energy you put into your efforts… your get up and go!” Gosh, you’re making me want to get up and go right now. lol…

Thanks Bill, your posts are always so uplifting and just make me smile. Have a great new week.

    • Hi Adrienne,

Thank you for your great comments. Glad you love my quip. Vitality is also the sparkle in your spunk! 🙂
I agree that it is also a frame of mind, which moment-to-moment, really guides us.

I think when people see the world in negative terms, they are really projecting from within.
I’ve also known many people who seem content to feast on misery. Definitely not my crowd.

You’re very welcome Adrienne, and I’m glad 🙂 Enjoy the week ahead also.

      Kind Regards,

  10. Hi Bill

Awesome post! The quote right at the top resonates so much with me given I have started over several times in my life.

For a long time now I have believed that the meaning of life is what we give it.

I agree with Sylviane that some people are always up and some down. Let’s face it we do not want to be around people who are always down and people who are up and ooze vitality are very attractive.

I agree with you list of ways to supercharge our vitality. They are all important. For me if I do not exercise I just do not feel right. I especially like your one on love and how you have worded that one.

A great post as usual Bill. Thank you.

    • Hi Sue,

Thank you for the encouragement and for your comments. I’m always glad when others relate and resonate with what i write.

I think the “meaning of life” is what we give it because we all have our own unique understanding and experiences that
      color how we see things.

I feel compassion for those who are down all the time. In many cases, there are medical reasons that produce this behavior.
I have come to understand that people who see the world as a dark place do so because there is something within themselves
that they do not like, and that is the darkness within their own soul being expressed. I intentionally associate with what I call
“power lifters”… those who build up, encourage and edify.

To me, love really is the answer to everything.

Have a wonderful week ahead Sue!

  11. I love #3, #4 and #8. When I wake up in the morning I remind myself of what I am truly grateful for to get me started on my day. Misery loves company and I stay clear of miserable people. They bring your down and its not worth the time. When I am happy its contagious and people want to know why I am smiling. I learned that back in high school and it has never left me. Its funny how that attribute just stuck with me. Great post!

    • Thanks Sonia,
I can feel the warmth of your smile just in how you expressed yourself.
I too, love to spend my time with like-minded positive people.

I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know you.

      Have a beautiful week ahead.
